The Social Network, Movie About Facebook. Facebook is about to become much more popular than it already is as a new film emerges revolving around online social network. Titled “The Social Network,” which opens Oct. 1, the film is already a leading Oscar contender. The portrait painted of Mark Zuckerberg, the co-founder and CEO of Facebook, is often scathing but also, at times, sympathetic.

Officially, Facebook said in a brief prepared statement that “the story presented in ‘The Social Network’ doesn’t match reality. It’s a portrayal designed to lure people into movie theaters rather than tell an accurate story.”

Zuckerberg’s only public comments about the film came during an interview with ABC’s Diane Sawyer on the day Facebook broke the 500 million user mark.

“The real story of Facebook is just that we’ve worked so hard for all this time,” Zuckerberg said in the ABC interview.

Sorkin suggested that “there is no single truth, there were multiple truths” to the Facebook story.

I know this is how Facebook is pushing back against the movie,” said Sorkin.

Sorkin points out that he had finished his screenplay for the film before Mezrich had finished his book, doing his own research as he went along.

“Most of my research was first-person research — speaking to people who are principals in the movie, speaking to other people who were right there. At times, in fact, Sorkin and others involved in the film seem rather fond of, or at least sympathetic toward, Zuckerberg.

Added actor Jesse Eisenberg, who plays Zuckerberg in the movie and whose cousin works for Facebook: “He is fiercely bright, consumed by his creation, and I don’t think he spent a lot of time self-evaluating.

Zuckerberg and his cohorts moved to Silicon Valley, where they tapped into venture capital and opened Facebook to high school students, corporate networks and then to everyone. Facebook is now the dominant social networking site for most of the globe, with about 550 million users.

Zuckerberg has said he has grown up since he was a college student accused of questionable ethics in building Facebook. If Zuckerberg has achieved a level of maturity, so has Facebook.

That mission could become quite profitable for him and Facebook: The more people share information about themselves online, the more money Facebook stands to make selling highly targeted advertising. Zuckerberg already is worth $6.9 billion, according to Forbes.

Facebook executives say they are committed to giving their users the tools they need to protect their privacy.
Even prominent voices in the technology community have expressed reservations that Facebook keeps pushing users to reveal more personal information than they signed up for.

Zuckerberg keeps his own life out of the public eye. A casual visitor to Facebook might not even spot Zuckerberg in T-shirt and jeans.
